Rodd Ambroson

Informed by science, enthralled by beauty, this Joseph, Oregon artist creates figurative art that at once engages the senses, the mind and the heart. “My sculptures reflect the amount of quiet passion I can transfer into them. Peace and quietude emanates from them...if I have done my job well.”

Raised in Central Oregon, Rodd’s university studies were in fine art with a minor in pre-medicine and a master’s degree in medical illustration. He is also a musician involved in both writing and performing his songs on guitar.

Rodd married his childhood sweetheart, Mary, and they re-side in Joseph, Oregon. When you run into him he is probably wearing his signature Tilley hat, blue jeans and crocs.

“It is dark when I come into the studio in the morning. I light the stove and feel its warmth. I pick up my guitar and play as I review yesterday's work with fresh eyes before beginning where I left off. I start work under low light. Before I’m finished, I will have tried every kind of light from every angle. I believe a sculpture must justify its space from any viewpoint. I try to create sculptures that are intimate, with all the beauty I can pull out of the clay. I sculpt primarily the female figure for its innate beauty in line and form. That form is a vehicle...a way to lay down the lines and create the most harmony in a composition that's possible.”

Ambroson’s collectors say, ‘Rodd’s gift is beyond talent...his deep insights into human feeling, as well as form, flow through his bronzes.’
